Behavior Modification Therapy

Behavior Modification Therapy is a well tried way to change certain habits and behavior by increasing the frequency of acceptable (wanted) behavior and decreasing the frequency of unacceptable behavior. Using behavior modification techniques is a key part of treating ADHD in children. This is done by basically encouraging good behavior with praise or rewards; this works best if the reward or praise immediately follows the positive behavior. The other part of Behavior Modification is setting consequences for bad behavior.

Depending on the age of the child, Behavior Modification techniques include strategies like

● Organizing the day

● Setting boundaries and expectations

● Explaining instructions

● Rewarding the child appropriately for good behavior and tasks completed

● Making a plan for discipline

● Communicating regularly with the child’s teachers

● Setting a good example for the child

● Being predictable

● Using Behavior Modification Charts

Remedial Education and Parental Counseling are the other cogs of this wheel; and when used judiciously along with medication, if needed, as part of an Individualized Therapy/Education Program go a long way in complete rehabilitation and allowing the child and family to enjoy a very fruitful inclusive life in society.
